Experts have warned of the dangers of extreme selectivity in food choices, after a boy lost his sight after living on a diet consisting of french fries and chips.

The 17-year-old boy was taken care of by ophthalmologists in Bristol, England, after he blinded him.

After completing primary school, the boy continued to live on french fries and chips (pringles), white bread, and some pieces of pork and sausages from time to time.

The tests revealed that he was severely deficient in vitamins and that he had been affected by malnutrition.

The boy, whose name was not disclosed, went to a general practitioner at the age of 14 because he was feeling tired and ill health. The doctor at the time told him that he had a deficiency in vitamin B12 and advised him to take more of it, but he did not follow his advice and did not improve his diet.

Three years later, he was taken to Bristol Eye Hospital because he began to lose his sight, according to a medical report.

Dr Deniz Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said: 'His diet was basically a quantity of french fries he buys every day from a local fish and chips restaurant. He also used to eat a snack of potato chips, pringles, and sometimes a slice of white bread, or pork, without any fruits or vegetables.'

She added: 'He justified this by hating some foods he couldn't accept, so I feel that the only foods he can eat are french fries and chips.'

Dr. Atan and her colleagues examined the boy's vitamin levels and found a deficiency in vitamin B12, and some other important vitamins and minerals, such as copper, selenium and vitamin D.

Shocking results

The boy was neither overweight nor skinny, but he was severely malnourished because of his poor eating regime.

The doctors said: 'He suffers from a lack of minerals in his bones, which is shocking for those of his age.'

The boy was advised to take certain amounts of vitamins, and then turned to a team of diet and mental health specialists.

Due to his loss of sight, the boy was registered in state records as a blind person.

'He has blind spots in the middle of his eyes.' This means he can't drive a car, and it's going to be hard for him to read, watch TV, or recognize faces.'
